Anamatic storyboard

This was a rough animatic storyboard me and craig put together to get a sence of timing and how we would like the pace of the sting to be! we need to test a few more of these until we are totally happy with the overall feeling then we can begin to add the moving image after we finish the filming on friday.

David Lynch

Someone mentioned David Lynch to me to look at his style of work .... after watching this i think it is completely odd and slightly creepy however it shows the overall message clearly! Also i don't know if this is entirely correct but i think it used the 2 shots 3rd meaning technique!

Ideas...

After a talk with Rick we have changed our idea completely! We are not going to create an animation but a live action piece. Similar to the video within the film the ring we are going to concentrate on pace and short clips that represent important or interesting parts of the story.

IDEA!!!!!!

For some bizarre reason after looking at this one coloured object surrounded by a lot of objects in a different colour i keep picturing a room full of black balloons and one single red one ??? I think this would be very affective as the balloons are a representation of the clouds in the story but we would need a hell of a lot of helium and balloons! I would show the characters emotions by adding and subtracting the black balloons to portray Bernice's feelings as we go through the story! Its a possibility?

Black and white image with one colour

Since i can't find the panasonic advert i have found an image that shows what i would like to attempt ... however i don't know if i would want to show it????

Panasonic Advert

I was watching a film on Sky Movies and i saw this advert for the Panasonic lumix camera where there is a woman with a red umbrella and entirely dressed in red and she is surrounded by people in black with black umbrellas! This connotes being an individual and being able to stand out within a crowd however in my case i would want to use the surroundings as being more powerful and to connote the characters emotions. (Like the clouds in her story it would be nice to use possibly people dressed the same to surround her when she is feeling most vulnerable and then they slowly whittle off to show she has overcome her problems!)

AND FOR THE LIFE OF ME I CAN'T FIND THE ADVERT TO SHOW YOU!!!!

Colour - Representation

http://www.colour-affects.co.uk/psychological-properties-of-colours
I have been looking how colours can represent moo
ds/feelings/emotions to see if it will help push my ideas further! I found the website above to be very useful since it mentions negative and positive emotions for each colour!

Sticky notes

This is another example we looked at ... but i don't think sticky notes as they are not mention or anything as such in the story it would look silly and nothing like the illustration!

Animation - Stop Motion

Stop Motion Animation - white board

Our illustrators really wanted to use stop motion animation so me and Craig decided to have a mooch and see if we could find a variety of them! This one i have seen before its a very good and less messy idea of creating stopmotion animation! On a whiteboard it is so easy to rub out and redraw but in the end we didn't think this style suited our story at all.

Leopard Print/Jaguar Print

Leopard

Jaguar

It mentions in the story that Bernice (main character) slaps somebody for saying she is wearing Leopard print pyjamas but they are in fact Jaguar print! ('I just kept thinking to myself 'jaguar print, not leopard'). The reason i am bringing this up is because a leopard is associated with Africa yet the Jaguar is very important in South America which is very significant to the story. (There are many references to the country and its culture simply because of the Quetzalcoatl.)

Quetzalcoatl

Quetzalcoatl - Quetzalcoatl (Classical NahuatlQuetzalcohuātl [ketsaɬˈko.aːtɬ]) is a Mesoamerican deity whose name comes from the Nahuatl language and has the meaning of "feathered-serpent".
The exact significance and attributes of Quetzalcoatl varied somewhat between civilizations and through history. Quetzalcoatl is one of the four sons of Ometecuhtli and Omecihuatl, he was often considered the god of the morning star.

Animation - Stop motion Animation

I love stop motion animation!!!!! This particular music video is absolutely fantastic!!!!!!
I love the use of the bed as the 'canvas' it represents the settings the people would be in just by looking at their actions!
We defiantly want to use stop motion animation in our animation as it can be portrayed by a variety of mediums ... we also discussed the use of live action stop motion animation and this is a great example to show the rest of my group! Need to TEST ... TEST ... TEST ... !!!

Animation - Claymation

Pingu is a very good example of Claymation (Stop motion animation) however i do not want to use claymation as i don't think it would fit with our particular story! I think it comes across as quiet childlike and quirky but we want to create a dream like situation so a more illustrative approach seems more appropriate!

Animation

Types of animation to consider ...

Traditional Animation:
Full Animation
Limited Animation
Rotoscoping
Live action/Animation

Stop motion animation:
Claymation
Puppet Animation
Cutout Animation
Silhouette Animation
Model Animation
Object Animation
Graphic Animation
Pixilation

3D Animation

Other Types of Animation:
Sand Animation
Flip Book
Paint-on-Glass Animation

Totem Pole - Shame Poles

What is the Shame Pole?

Poles used for public ridicule are usually called "shame poles", and were erected to shame individuals or groups for unpaid debts.

Totem Pole - Close up (Design)

From Saxman Totem Park, Ketchikan, Alaska
I wanted to take a closer look at the patterns/colour pallets/over all style of the totem pole just to help inspire ideas and styles for our animation! Our animation needs to portray a dream like state therefore the use of reds, purples, greens and blacks can be used to create linear like patterns maybe? The colours remind me of coloured chalk on black paper ... need to test!

Totem Pole - Important Note (Vertical Order)

I just fount out that Vertical order of images is widely believed to be a significant representation of importance. This idea is so pervasive that it has entered into common parlance with the phrase "low man on the totem pole." This phrase is indicative of the most common belief of ordering importance, that the higher figures on the pole are more important or prestigious. This is very obvious when i thought about it! In the illustration the god that is trying to take away the character holds the most power therefore he is the largest and at the very top of the pole! So within the animation we need to portray the power and importance of the 'god' so we could show this by the size of the actual representation or the order of when it may appear or maybe the length of time it is shown through out the animation ... or the timing of the animation it could basically follow the order of importance as if we were looking at the totem pole from top to bottom!

Totem Pole - North America

The Totem pole originated from the indigenous people of the Pacific northwest coast of North America. They are carved from large trees mainly Western Red Cedar which do decay eventually in the rainforest.
'The meanings of the designs on totem poles are as varied as the cultures that make them. Totem poles may recount familiar legends, clan lineages, or notable events. Some poles celebrate cultural beliefs, but others are mostly artistic presentations. Certain types of totem poles are part of mortuary structures, and incorporate grave boxes with carved supporting poles, or recessed backs for grave boxes. Poles illustrate stories that commemorate historic persons, represent shamanic powers, or provide objects of public ridicule. "Some of the figures on the poles constitute symbolic reminders of quarrels, murders, debts, and other unpleasant occurrences about which the Native Americans prefer to remain silent... The most widely known tales, like those of the exploits of Raven and of Kats who married the bear woman, are familiar to almost every native of the area. Carvings which symbolize these tales are sufficiently conventionalised to be readily recognizable even by persons whose lineage did not recount them as their own legendary history."'

The Totem Pole

What is a Totem Pole?

'A Totem pole is a symbol of unity, tradition and pride. It represents a family's histories, relationships, stories, beliefs and experiences.'

After meeting the illustrators

After talking to the illustrators in our team and hearing about how they represented the story in their illustration they mentioned they based their piece on a totem pole so i want to look into the history of the totem pole ... where it originated from ... patterns and designs of the totem pole for inspiration to help with what style we think would be most appropriate for the story!

RealtimeUK

RealtimeUK was established 1n 1996 and is a CG production studio that are involved in the game and TV industry! I have had a look around their website and it is by far one of the most impressive yet!!! So exciting!!!!

The link to their 'work' page ....

One of my favourites is a trailer for Shogun 2 Total War for Sega. I love the use of 2D animation on the map and then it also encompassed 3D animation when the sword stabs into the paper! LOVE IT!!!

Kilogramme Animation - Into the Unknown

http://vimeo.com/7794420

Once again i couldn't find this video on youtube so click the link :).
'This title sequence by Kilogramme was from the show 'Into the Unknown' which was broadcast in 2005. It was made for Dreamscope productions and as the show was about haunted buildings we decided to make the titles from the point of view of someone who'd just been murdered or was about to commit murder.' The reason i wanted to look into this more is the fact that unlike their other work this seems to have a different style and stands out to me above the rest of their work!

Kilogramme Animation - Cold Caller (Wales campaign to tackle doorstep crime)

I couldn't find Cold Caller on youtube so im afraid you will have to click this link :)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10156198

The £1.8m campaign was created after following the case of Anne Cornock, aged 76, of Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, who was cheated out of £272,000 by a doorstep caller.
After watching the short advert i thought about what Kilogramme had mentioned on their blog ... they said they based their design style on disney's 101 Dalmations and this is very evident! It almost seems like your watching cruella deville trying to sneakily steal the puppies!

Kilogramme Animation

http://www.kilogramme.co.uk/flash.html
Kilogramme are a company thats specialise in Animation ... they are located on Newton Street Manchester!! Kilogramme was founded in 2005 and their very first project was to help Euro RSCG Riley to create an advertising campaign for Edgehill Uni. Kilogramme said 'they provided pretty much everything for this project including; music, design, animation and even a helicopter for one of their shots. Their advertising campaign work so successfully that the uni's enquiry rate doubled and they are still working with Edgehill Uni and RSCG Riley to this very day! As well as this they have also worked on a mini animated series on Dr Who, CBBC's 'Streetmonsters' and Metro for unit 9.
They also have a blog!!! Which i am going to follow! :D
http://kilogrammenews.blogspot.com/
A quick snippet from their blog ... i think i will find this company very very very useful as they have kindly told us what softwear they have used too!!! VERY HELPFUL!

'Hello, Here's a public information film we've just finished for Euro RSCG Riley. It's to warn OAPs in Wales about rogue traders and distraction burglars. We based the design style on '101 Dalamtions' and used Flash and 3DSMAX to animate the main character. I think it's one of the most polished things we've ever done.
Animation was provided by Claire Grey, Craig Knowles, David Ridges and Christian Johnson.
Design by Craig Knowles.
Backgrounds by Chris Coady.
Ink and Paint by Sam Jones and Gill Biddle.
Direction by Jon Turner.'
